Thunder: Just Calling It In.

Yet another movie using those with mental handicaps as laughing stock. “Tropic Thunder” - a movie meant to ridicule the movie industry - accomplishes it’s goal by painting its target with the “Retard” name. And, of course, piles in a heap of good old “derrr” speech with an overbite and a bad haircut. As near as I can tell from the trailers and clips, it seems to simply attack the movie industry by calling them all names and then pointing and laughing. Typical playground bully, and just as artistic. It certainly seems like it was an easy movie to write. (I won’t see this film. Of course, I wouldn’t have seen it in any case, since Tom Cruise appears. I actually despise that talentless poseur, and have found his participation in a film to be a great indicator of how painful it promises to be.)
There are boycots and pickets being planned. Meanwhile, ASAN has created a video that points out how hurtful these kinds of words can be:
I have to say, This Ben Stiller project has lost him my respect. Tom Cruise on the other hand… I never respected to begin with.
Hi Jeff. I’m just stopping by to mention that ASAN now has a state blog for Ohio, in addition to our local chapter blogs. We’re all posting the R Word video.
When you get a blog set up for ASAN Iowa, let me know, and I’ll add it to the list of ASAN state and local blogs in the sidebar of the Ohio sites.
Cheers,
Meg
